Mushroom accord, CB I Hate Perfume
Mushroom accord from CB I Hate Perfume’s Earth series, $30 for 15ml absolute. Simple, for-the-people white button mushrooms - they’re freshly cut, bouncy, bobbly and clean, in a salad with barely scented bitter greens and nasturtiums, and a couple of dandelions.

Adidas Excstasy Women's High Tops
Review by Elena I recently won this pair of shoes. They were in a prize pack, and when I opened the lid, I was every sort of disappointed and on the cusp of a hissy fit. They were not the ones I wanted. These were petrifying, to say the least. So big. So shiny. And the word “adidas” is not at all subtle. If you saw a line up of pairs of many different types of shoes, and a line up of...

Lush - 9 To 5 Cleanser
A good cleanser to use when you’re too tired/drunk to be bothered washing your face/eye make up off properly. Oil based but not super heavy, it works with or without water, is gentle and smells like lilies.

Extreme Male Beauty
TV show - TV One, 9:30pm Wednesday nights Review by Elena Noted the TV show’s title in the TV guide around dinner time, and a decision was made to watch it. Duly switched the channel over from Wife Swap, and was greeted by the show’s presenter/protagonist whipping his willy out, along with four other men, standing in front of circular holes in walls, whilst a group of women on the...

Lemonade
Lemonade, aka Lemonade Apple Aesthetically not very pleasing. Taste, without knowing it was a Lemonapple (will now be known as Lemonapple as Lemonade does not sit well with me) I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Very mild in the lemon-taste, certainly not an alternative to either the Lemon or Apple but rather their illegitimate child who (like us all) only got a handful of good things...

One moment in the Auckland Theatre Company's 2010...
Juliet, her mother and her nurse have been discussing the prospect of Juliet marrying the eligible Paris. Juliet and her mother have been standing in front of an invisible mirror, studying their own and each other’s reflections. Lady Capulet in this production is a Russian trophy wife, wearing very high heels and a tight strapless dress, full of erotic appeal in a strong, defined way. Juliet, in a...

Alphabeat - The Beat Is...
I’m only about 7 tracks in, but it’s like they got a robot, equipped with perfectly realistic human voices, to produce perfect sounding dance pop songs that you feel like you already know but you don’t, one after the other.  http://www.thisisalphabeat.com/

Gorilla Perfumes
Tuca Tuca - a pale but deep floral violet (along the lines of Guerlain’s Meteorites, but less powder) and fairly clean jasmine. The jasmine is irritating here, too sweet and similar to what’s in their Vanillary (not the brilliant ashy heavy version like in their Flying Fox). There’s some green in the violet leaf, which is nice but doesn’t get enough play compared to the floral aspect. Dry...

Chocolate Soy Milk
Chocolate soy milk, tastes a little more homely than normal chocolate milk. Cute small box. Drinkable in 17-21 seconds. A step closer to going vegan, certainly an option

Jokes and Innovative Action by Paolo Virno
(an essay on the transformative nature of jokes, published in his book Multitude: Between Innovation and Negation, also in Artforum sometime) I always enjoy simple explanations on complicated but everyday kinda things, so Virno’s simple explanation on why jokes are important - and super important at that, that is politically - is nice, and long. And useful: since reading it I see the basic...

Sleep
Commitment to sleep and the failure to do so. Side sleep, although most popular, often cuts the circulation. I figure there are three ways to go about the bottom-arm sleep position: arm-between-legs straddle, under pillow, or palm-to-face. The latter being the most popular. Upward facing sleep. Does not exist in my reality.

Nell May in Dry Run Wet Jog
Nell May’s work in the exhibition Dry Run Wet Jog at Elam’s projectspace B431: The word jogging seems like it’s from the 70s*. Nell’s exercises in gradients, cross hatching and freehand painted straight lines are similarly healthy, wholesome and plausibly retro (her newsprint is faded, and her gradients are almost lunar). They coolly suggest freedom, experimentation and casual...

Penguin Great Loves - Chekhov 'A Russian Affair'
The economic aesthetic is really appealing - sparse and bleak, but with this underlying depth/luxury which isn’t exactly material but isn’t necessarily not.

CB I Hate Perfume
CB I Hate Perfume: an indie perfume house based in Williamsburg. Their stuff is extensive and realist (the founder previously founded Demeter). My favourites: single accords I liked most were the Mushroom Chanterelle, one of the myrrhs, Fig Leaf Crushed, and Macadamia Nut (comfy). Actual perfumes I paid actual money for were Russian Caravan Tea, Burning Leaves (pretty like, dirty), M #3 November...
